Donington Park delays due to heavy rain

The season-opening British Touring Car Championship round at Donington Park has been significantly delayed due to heavy overnight rain in the East Midlands.

Rain persisted throughout the morning, and has only eased just after midday at the Leicestershire venue.

The opening race had been scheduled to get underway at 11:30 BST, which should have been the fifth race of the day after four supporting races beforehand.

But as of 13:15, no races at all had taken place at Donington.

It is now understood that the opening race is to take place at 13:35 BST, with the pitlane opening at 13:20.

The most significant challenge for officials has been the section of circuit from the Craner Curves down to the Old Hairpin, which sits in a low point in the landscape.

Marshals were seen with spades on the grass beside the circuit, digging trenches to attempt to help the ground drain.

Water had been seeping from the ground beside the circuit, creating a river running across the track.

An untimed ten-minute warm-up session was held for the BTCC cars, but several drivers, including Rob Huff, Nick Halstead, Aiden Moffat and Mikey Doble, went off the circuit at the Old Hairpin, caught out by the water flowing across the circuit in the braking zone.

Donington Park has a curfew of 20:00, but it is understood that the BTCC races will need to be held before ITV4 goes off the air at 18:45.
