WSC Group, the global TCR rights holder, has announced a new ‘Gen I’ group for older specification TCR-certified cars, in order to enable them to race in dedicated TCR series for longer.
Ten models of car have been revealed on the list – including four models from the Volkswagen-Audi Group. Essentially, the list takes in cars which raced in the first two seasons of TCR competition (2015 – 2016).
All cars must continue to comply with the TCR Technical Form and any relevant extensions issued prior to 31 December 2017. Any extensions issued after that time will automatically classify the model as a ‘current TCR’ car.
The Balance of Performance [BoP] for these models will be dealt with separately and issued via dedicated TCR Technical Bulletins.
TCR UK had already announced plans to create a separate classification for first-generation TCR cars, and this announcement by WSC continues in that spirit for global competition.
This year, TCR Italy ran a separate category for cars with a DSG gearbox, which are therefore all first-generation cars.
“We were aware of the need to create the ‘TCR Gen I’,” said WSC President Marcello Lotti. “This was a matter that has also been raised by promoters and competitors alike.
“Nearly ten years since the TCR concept was launched, there are still hundreds of first-generation cars competing in the different series around the globe and we want to assure them a longer and competitive racing life.
“The establishing of the ‘TCR Gen I’ will give the promoters the option of running these models in dedicated series or in a separate class within the overall championship.”
The following models will be identified as ‘TCR Gen I’.

- CUPRA TCR (SEQ & DSG)
- Honda Civic Type R FK2 TCR
- LADA Vesta TCR
- Opel/Holden/Vauxhall Astra TCR
- Peugeot 308 Racing Cup
- SEAT Leon Cup Racer
- Subaru WRX STi TCR
- Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR (SEQ & DSG)
