NAPA Racing’s Ash Sutton made history in 2023 with a dominant fourth British Touring Car Championship title after a “journey [that] has been absolutely mega”.
After qualifying on Saturday, Sutton said that four titles had “a mega ring to it”. After securing the title in race one on Sunday at Brands Hatch, Sutton admitted securing the title – his first in front-wheel-drive machinery – had still not sunk in by the end of the day.
“It’s starting to sink in a little bit, but it’s still not quite there,” said Sutton to TouringCars.Net. “I think we need to have a few beers and get the celebrations going.
“It’s just absolutely phenomenal… Absolutely phenomenal. I can’t wait to wake up tomorrow morning and for it to feel less like a dream and more like a reality.”
The year has meant that Sutton has now raised the bar to something unseen in recent years. Even after only just winning his fourth title the soon to be #1 driver is already thinking of how to better it.
“It’s not just [about] soaking it in, but how do you better it as well? It’s a milestone, that’s for sure. I think it’s going to take a few weeks. I think it’s going to be one of those where we’re going to sit back and look at it and go, ‘we did something special then’. Huge credits to NAPA UK and all the guys at Alliance Racing, they’ve been phenomenal.
“We’ll give it a week or so before we go back to the drawing board. But there’s a few bits that the guys want to work on with the car. And I’ll just keep trying to improve myself.”
The year 2023 has been a year that Sutton will struggle to forget. A year that has been dominant without question. The 29-year-old has scored six out of ten pole positions, has taken 12 race wins and stood on the podium in 20 of the season’s 30 races. His win tally alone is the total combined of the three behind him in the championship. Along with that and starting a family, 2023 really has been Sutton’s year.
“Yeah, it is. Especially with actually now having a family and my fiancé Ellie, and my little boy, Sonny, to have them here supporting me and a part of the whole journey has been absolutely mega.”
