Alex Ley and Carl Boardley come out on top during incident-filled day at Knockhill

For races two and three at Knockhill for the TCR UK championship, Alex Ley and Carl Boardley took home the spoils as various competitors suffered mechanical and damage dramas.

In the reverse grid race, Ley took victory on paper as his race-long pursuer Jenson Brickley was given a penalty for hitting Ley on the penultimate lap. As Brickley ran into the back of Ley under braking for the hairpin, it forced the Area Motorsport Hyundai wide which Brickley took as his opportunity to move into the race lead.

“I was defending but I could just feel him pushing me,” explained Ley. “I don’t know if he did it by mistake but I don’t think he did it on purpose.”

Ultimately, the stewards took action after they concluded that the contact was avoidable.

The win should have fallen to championship leader Boardley but he had a penalty for a track limits infringement so he dropped down to fourth.

Therefore, third went to Adam Sheppard after a race-long battle with Callum Newsham.
“It was an eventful one,” said Sheppard. “The balance of the car kept changing throughout the race but I enjoyed that one!”

Newsham on the other hand would eventually drop out after his exhaust came loose and was subsequently shown the black flag.

Matthew Wilson completed the top five after starting from pole position, the CUPRA driver doing all he could to hang on but could do nothing to stop the faster machines behind him.

The Audi duo of Joe Marshall and Bradley Hutchison came across the line in seventh and eighth followed by the Vauxhall Astra of Darelle Wilson. The top ten was completed by Jac Constable who had heavy contact with Brickley earlier in the race and was forced onto the grass as a result.

Race three was less chaotic as Boardley led from pole position to the flag with all the action happening outside the top three. Boardley remains adamant that the setup of the car is what allowed him to drive away from his competitors.

“We got the car switched on from lap one,” he revealed. “It was a little loose on the rear for the first couple of laps but as soon as it settled down, you could really lean on it and really attack the kerbs.”

Despite a challenge from Marshall in the middle of the race, Brickley took the runner-up spot as Marshall brought his Rob Boston Racing machine home in third.

Just outside the top three was Constable who got the better of Sheppard’s Hyundai in a decisive pass coming out of Leslie’s mid-distance. Sheppard was fifth with Alex Ley sixth after a contretemps with Newsham on the exit of the chicane.

The four drivers closing out the top tenwere Bruce Winfield, Bradley Kent, Brad Hutchison, and Jonathon Beeson.

Two wins out of three races at Knockhill mean that Boardley is the new championship leader on 273 points, ahead of Winfield (234) and Brickley (225).
