Halder Motorsport’s Jack Young was the fastest driver in a red-flag interrupted second practice session for the TCR Europe series at the Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya.
Young, who had earlier been second in the opening session of the day, posted a lap time of 1 minute 54.756 seconds to end FP2 with the best time, although there was limited competitive running.
As a result of the interruptions, drivers got less track time and lap times were over half a second slower than in the early morning session, which had been topped by championship leader Franco Girolami.
Giacomo Ghermandi brought out the first of the red flags, around half-way through the session, before Alejandro Geppert stopped his Hyundai on track at Turn 4 just five minutes into the restarted session.
The decision was then taken not to resume the track action, leaving several drivers unable to improve their times from the morning session.
Young, who has just celebrated his birthday, thus edged out Target Competition’s Josh Files, who in second was the leading Hyundai driver, albeit a huge 0.678 seconds off the pace of the Honda.
“It feels so weird to be twenty-one! We celebrated on Tuesday, but this tops it off nicely; to be second and first in the two free practice sessions, so I’m happy,” said Northern Irishman Young.
“It was a bit of a weird session, there were two red flags and we had one in FP1 as well, so I don’t think anyone has shown their full potential as yet.
“We definitely have the pace there and so we’ll go forward in the Qualy tomorrow. We plan what we’re going to do at the start of each session, so when there are red flags it restricts what we can do and we have to change things.
“It makes things a bit stressful but we tried to make the best of it and we got a couple of quick laps in.”
Aggressive Team Italia’s Pepe Oriola was third, the Spaniard having posted the top time eight and a half minutes into the session before Young beat him just 20 seconds later.
Tom Coronel was the leading Comtoyou Racing Audi driver in fourth, over a second off the pace, ahead of Nicola Baldan’s Target Hyundai in fifth.
Sébastien Loeb Racing’s John Filippi was the leading CUPRA in sixth, whilst championship leader Girolami was just seventh quickest in his Audi, over a second and half off the pace.
Qualifying is scheduled to get underway at 09:45 CEST (08:45 BST) on Saturday morning.
