The official entry list for the start of the hybrid era of the British Touring Car Championship has been published, featuring 29 drivers in cars from eight different manufacturers.
TOCA unveiled the entry list as the cars for the 2022 championship broke cover at the series’ official media launch at Thruxton on Tuesday evening.
All of the cars will feature hybrid power this year for the first time, with a new system having been designed and developed by Cosworth Electronics as the BTCC becomes the world’s first major touring car championship to adopt hybrid power in all cars.
This year, drivers will not be laden with success ballast for performing well in races, but will rather have the benefit of up to 15 seconds per lap of additional hybrid power, deployed via the press of a button on the steering wheel.
The system is designed to be used for both attack and defence, opening up a new strategic element to the season’s on-track action.
On-track testing of the new system continues at Thruxton tomorrow, along with further media activities.
It was also announced that the BTCC is set to gain additional ITV airtime in 2022, as the two events at Brands Hatch Indy (15 May) and Oulton Park (12 June) will also be broadcast live on ITV for three hours each race day, as well as the full ITV4 coverage as in previous seasons.
Reigning champion Ash Sutton heads up the official entry list, as he switches to racing a Motorbase Performance-run NAPA Racing UK Ford Focus ST, with the returning Dan Cammish as his formidable team-mate.
Two further Fords will be run by the outfit for Ollie Jackson and Sam Osborne under the banner of ‘Apec Racing with Beavis Morgan’.
Team BMW continues with Colin Turkington and Stephen Jelley, whilst Jake Hill joins the WSR team in a third separately-entered BMW 330e M Sport racing as ‘ROKiT MB Motorsport’.
The Speedworks Motorsport-run Toyota Gazoo Racing UK team is once again headed up by Rory Butcher, with new team-mate Ricky Collard in the second Corolla.
Last year’s teams’ champions, Laser Tools Racing, will have its two-car Infiniti campaign headed up by Aiden Moffat, with rookie Dexter Patterson joining the team.
BTC Racing continues as a three-car squad, with backing from Rich Energy. The team secured a high-profile signing in Jason Plato in recent weeks, with Josh Cook and Jade Edwards occupying the team’s other two Hondas.
Title contending outfit Excelr8 Motorsport continues with a quartet of Hyundai i30 Fastback cars, with Tom Ingram and Jack Butel staying on board and being joined by Tom Chilton and Daniel Lloyd at the Suffolk-based team.
Team Dynamics had tried to run three cars in this year’s championship, but instead sticks with two Honda Civics for Gordon Shedden and Daniel Rowbottom under the ‘Halfords Racing with Cataclean’ banner.
Ciceley motorsport, which switched to WSR-built BMW machinery last season, continues with it’s 3-series’ in 2022, as Adam Morgan is joined by debutant George Gamble.
CarStore with Power Maxed Racing was one of the last team’s to confirm its full line-up for 2022, and has an all-new driver line-up, with Michael Crees returning to the BTCC whilst Ash Hand makes his first foray into the series in a Vauxhall Astra.
Finally, Team HARD will again run four CUPRA Leon cars, with Jack Goff, Árón Taylor-Smith and Nicolas Hamilton all staying with the Kent team and being joined by the returning Bobby Thompson. The squad is the biggest on the grid this year, as Rick Parfitt Jr will also race an Infiniti under the ‘Upton Steel with Euro Car Parts Racing’ banner run by the team.
