Young charger Kody Garland secures GRM TCR Australia drive

Young charger Kody Garland has secured a drive with Garry Rogers Motorsport in this year’s TCR Australia series, where he will race one of the team’s Renault Mégane RS TCR cars alongside James Moffat.

Garland, 21, has already worked with the team, having crewed on the team’s S5000 car at Sydney Motorsport Park last year, continuing in the role at Bathurst.

He was then selected to take part in the inaugural GRM Combine, an event organised by the team along with experienced racer Marcos Ambrose. As part of that he got to sample the Renault at Winton Raceway.

New South Welshman Garland recently graduated to competing in Aussie Racing Cars, having moved through the karting ranks beforehand.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am grateful to Garry and Barry for their support,” said Garland.

“I’m really going to be pushing this year and hopefully get some great results.”

GRM Director Barry Rogers said that Garland’s performances at their recent young guns test day had helped him to secure the drive.

“Kody came out of the Combine as one of the young guys who was very, very impressive,” added Rogers.

“Garry’s keen to bring some more talent through GRM like Kody and we’ll see him at Symmons Plains next week for the first round of the TCR season.”

GRM Competition Director Marcos Ambrose believes that Garland is now ready to step up to a more professional racing series in TCR Australia.

“We first saw Kody on track at the GRM Combine so that’s really exciting that we’ve been able to get someone that’s shown a lot of composure and skill,” said Ambrose.

“He showed that he was really ready to step up and we’ve been able to place him in one of our factory cars here at GRM.

“We’re excited to see his development, year one will be a development year for him to learn the cars and tracks but we’re really excited to have him on the GRM team and looking forward to seeing what he can do in the Renault.”

The 2022 TCR Australia season gets underway at Symmons Plains Raceway next weekend on 12 – 13 February.
