Vernay, Girolami and Engstler dealt Adria penalties

Three drivers have been penalised following stewarding investigations into the two WTCR races that took place today at Adria Raceway.

As if his title charge hadn’t been hampered enough already, Jean-Karl Vernay was handed a five-second time penalty and two penalty points for his license after crowding Nathanael Berthon into the barriers during race one.

Consequently, the Frenchman plummets to fifteenth in the final result, elevating Gabriele Tarquini and Yann Ehrlacher into ninth and tenth positions respectively.

Then, in race two, more incidents occurred. At the very beginning of the race, contact from Yvan Muller forced Nestor Girolami into the turn three gravel trap, and upon re-joining the track the Argentine was collected by Vernay.

After considering all the evidence, the stewards have decided to penalise Girolami for an unsafe re-join, but not Muller for initiating the contact which put him off the track in the first place. As such, the Honda driver will serve a three-place grid penalty in the first race at Sochi, and has also been awarded one point on his license.

Finally, the finishing order between Luca Engstler and Rob Huff has been reversed, with the German having been adjudged to have passed Huff a little too robustly for ninth place.
