Josh Cook took his second win of the day in race two at Brands Hatch as Ash Sutton’s sixth place finish was enough for him to secure his third British Touring Car title.
Sutton did lose out to championship rival Colin Turkington off the start line, but his race two result now means he sits 30 points ahead of the Team BMW driver with just one race remaining and he also secures the Independent Drivers Championship ahead of Tom Ingram too.
Double race winner Cook led from start to finish in the BTC Racing Honda Civic, although his teammate Senna Proctor crashed out of the race after locking up going into the Druids hairpin on the first lap on lap one after slight contact with Dan Lloyd behind.
A chaotic first lap then saw Ollie Jackson in the MB Motorsport with Blue Square Ford Focus turned sideways going into Surtees after contact with the Car Gods with Cicely Motorsport BMW of Tom Chilton.
When Jackson spun, drivers including Chilton’s teammate Adam Morgan, Team BMW’s Tom Oliphant and Tom Ingram in the Ginsters EXCELR8 with TradePriceCars.com Hyundai all were caught up in the incident with both Morgan and Oliphant suffering big damage as a result.
Ingram was however able to continue after narrowly avoiding the cars ahead, but dropped down the order before a fine comeback drive saw him end the race 12th.
With Cook holding off Lloyd for the win, Gordon Shedden made it two third place finishes so far on Sunday in the Halfords Racing with Cataclean Honda, after Turkington couldn’t get past, while Daniel Rowbottom ended race two in fifth
Championship winner Sutton ended race two sixth in the Laser Tools Racing Infiniti, while Rory Butcher was one of a number of drivers to make the most of the incidents ahead of him during the race and crossed the line in seventh.
Butcher, driving the Toyota GAZOO Racing UK Corolla, had started the race down in 16th but quickly made his way though the field which also involved a move up the inside of Aiden Moffat at the Druids hairpin.
The pair collided on the run up to the corner that saw the Toyota end up on the grass, but Butcher managed to get the car stopped in time for the corner and he held on to the position.
Tom Chilton, Stephen Jelley – another driver to make a charge through the field throughout the race after starting the race in 21st following an engine misfire in race one – and Jake Hill completed the top 10 in race two.
The final round of the 2021 season is set to get underway at 17:15 BST.
