Mikel Azcona further extended his championship lead in the TCR Europe series with another victory in race two at the Nürburgring.
The Volcano Motorsport CUPRA driver had started the race on the third row of the grid, but found himself in second by the exit of the first corner after making yet another fine start and driving round the outside of several of the drivers ahead.
He also benefited from slow starts from both front row man Viktor Davidovski and Klim Gavrilov that enabled him to move quickly up the field, and by the end of lap two he’d also caught up to early race leader Jack Young.
A few moments later he dived up the inside of the British driver at Turn 13 to take the lead and the Spaniard pulled away from the rest of the field throughout the rest of the race.
Young, who had started from pole, also soon lost out to Franco Girolami at Turn One on lap four and by the later of the stages found himself in a close battle for the final podium position.
The Brutal Fish Racing driver led five drivers who were all fighting for the position, including Teddy Clairet and podium finisher on Saturday Niels Langeveld, with a controversial incident taking place on the last lap.
Despite struggling with pace during the final laps of the race, Young was seemingly on course to hold on for third despite pressure from the drivers behind, however Clairet made a dive up the inside of the Brit at turn three.
The pair made contact, with Young being forced sideways and Clairet moved into a controversial third on the road as a result, but the stewards decided post-race to swap the positions and Young was given third place as a result.
With Clairet being demoted to fourth after his collision with Young, fifth in race two went to Langeveld, with Jáchym Galáš ending the race sixth in his Janik Motorsport Hyundai.
Klim Gavrilov took seventh, with that train of drivers all finishing comfortably ahead of ComToYou Racing pair Nicolas Baert and Dusan Borkovic.
Race one pole sitter Isidro Callejas could only manage a tenth place finish in race two in another of the Brutal Fish Racing Honda’s, with Jimmy Clairet, Sami Taoufik, Viktor Davidovski, reigning champion Mehdi Bennani, and Martin Ryba also finishing in the points scoring positions in Germany.
The next rounds of the 2021 TCR Europe season are set to take place at Monza in three weekends time.
