Franco Girolami takes maiden TCR Europe win in Zandvoort race two

PSS Racing’s Franco Girolami took his maiden TCR Europe win in the second race of the weekend at Zandvoort.

Girolami, who had started race two fourth on the grid, managed to get the better of both Jimmy Clairet and Sami Taoufik on the opening lap before he then overtook early race leader Niels Langeveld on lap two.

The second lap of the race would also see drama for yesterday’s race winner Tom Coronel.

The Dutch driver had been battling with Sebastien Loeb Racing’s Taoufik, but his Audi RS3 slowed coming out of Hugenholzbocht and he collided with Kilm Gavrilov who was following closely behind.

The Russian driver then also collected the Hyundai of Felice Jelmini, with the Italian being spun into the wall and losing his right rear wheel following the contact and he was also out of the race.

Coronel did manage to keep going in the race for a further lap as the safety car was called, but he then appeared in the pitlane with suspected suspension damage and took no further part in race two of the weekend.

Once the safety car returned to the pit lane, Girolami managed to comfortably control his race lead and eventually took the win ahead of Langeveld and Brutal Fish Racing’s Isidro Callejas.

More drama unfolded for another leading name from yesterday as Callejas’ teammate Jack Young ran wide into the gravel trap at Mastersbocht after going side by side into the corner with Taoufik and he fell to the back of the field as a result.

However, the Brit made a fine recovery drive through the remainder of the 15-lap race and eventually ended race two in ninth after overtaking both Viktor Davidovski and Mat’o Homola late on.

Fourth in the second race of the weekend was the impressive Dušan Borković, with the Serbian gradually making his way up from eighth on the grid.

The ComToYou Racing man overtook a number of drivers including SLR pair Taoufik and Mehdi Bennani and he also completed a fine round the outside more on Jimmy Clareit going into turn one on lap 11 that saw him move into his eventual finishing position.

With Clairet finishing fifth, sixth in race two went to Bennani with teammate Taoufik taking seventh.

Nicolas Baert had been battling with Viktor Davidovski for eighth during the middle of the race, however he managed to hold on after the PSS Racing Team driver was caught by Young on the final lap.

Mat’o Homola was also involved in the battle ahead with Baert and Davidovski but ended the race in 11th, with Martin Ryba, Teddy Clairet, Jáchym Galás and Gilles Colombani completing the top 15 finishers in race two in the Netherlands.

The next rounds of the 2021 TCR Europe season are set to take place at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps between July 29-31.
