Penalty blow costs Jean-Karl Vernay race three podium

Jean-Karl Vernay has been awarded two time penalties this weekend, one of which costing him a podium in the third World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) race at the Slovakiaring.

Vernay’s first time penalty amounted to a total of five seconds, and came after he was deemed responsible for a collision on lap one with Norbert Michelisz at turn two.

In that instance, Vernay tapped the rear of Michelisz’s Hyundai, pitching it into a slide which the Hungarian did well to save. However, the reigning champion lost a dozen of positions in the process.

The penalty is enough to cost him a place on the podium, and has also earned him a further penalty point on his race license.

Earlier on in the day, Vernay was involved in another opening lap incident in race two, when he ran too deep into turn one and caused Santiago Urrutia to go off into the gravel trap.

He then made contact with Yvan Muller on lap four, and the Frenchman was given a more severe 10-second penalty for this offence, dropping him down from fourth to fourteenth in the race two results.

Comtoyou Racing are the main beneficiaries of Vernay’s misfortune, with Nathanaël Berthon and Gilles Magnus moving up into second and third place respectively in race three, while Zengő Motorsport’s Mikel Azcona inherits fourth place for race two.
