ComToYou Racing’s Mehdi Bennani says he is delighted with the performance of both him and his team after the Moroccon driver took pole position for the opening TCR Europe race in Belgium.
Bennani, who is now just six points behind championship leader Mike Halder after claiming his second pole position of the season, will line up alongside series returnee Tom Coronel for race one at Spa after making the most of an ever-drying track.
“For sure, every time it’s exciting to make pole, even in these damp conditions because it’s not dry and it’s not wet,” said the delighted Morocon driver.
“The team did a fantastic job to do exactly what we needed to do in the short time we had before Qualifying, so I’m really, really happy with the work we all did today.
“We are driving on the limits and it’s very easy to make a mistake. I’m happy that this time the mistakes actually favoured me and were on my side for a change.”
The former WTCC driver was quick throughout the entire session and had also topped the first part of qualifying ahead of John Filippi before again setting the pace in Q2.
“I didn’t know I was P1 until the team told me,” added Bennani.
“You never know in these conditions and the last driver to do a lap is the last one to find all the best grip, so it’s not decided until right at the very end.”
Race one of the TCR Europe series at Spa takes place later today at 16:50 CEST (15:50 BST).
