Robin Frijns claimed his fourth DTM pole position of the season in qualifying for race two at the Lausitzring, as he edged out Abt Sportsline team-mate Nico Müller and Team Phoenix’s René Rast.
Frijns popped in the fastest time, a lap of 1 minute 36.344 seconds, in the closing seconds as he edged out team-mate Müller, who had just moments earlier gone fastest with the best time, by a mere 0.018 seconds.
Prior to that, Rast had sat on top of the timesheets since just before the halfway stage of the short 20 minute session, with the German only slightly improving on his final run to end up 0.124 seconds from pole.
BMW’s Sheldon van der Linde surged up the times with his final flying lap to end up as the Munich manufacturer’s best representative in fourth, just under three tenths off the pace.
Audi’s Jamie Green was fifth, ahead of BMW Team RMG duo Marco Wittmann in sixth and Timo Glock, who was BMW’s best performer in Saturday’s race, in seventh.
Loïc Duval was the best driver for Audi Sport Team Phoenix in eighth, whilst the top ten was completed by BMW Team RMR’s Lucas Auer and WRT’s Harrison Newey, the Brit breaking into the top ten for the third time this season and equalling his qualifying performance from Saturday.
BMW Team ART’s Robert Kubica also equalled his best qualifying performance of the season in 11th, 0.928 seconds from pole.
Team Phoenix’s Mike Rockenfeller will have been disappointed to end up in only 14th, over a second off the pace in the slowest factory Audi RS5.
Race two is scheduled to get underway at 13:33 CEST (12:33 BST).
