Audi Sport Team Rosberg’s René Rast claimed pole in a wet qualifying at the Hockenheimring, taking his eighth DTM pole of the season with a laptime of 1 minute 45.552 seconds.
The 2019 DTM champion beat BMW Team RMG’s Marco Wittmann to pole by a slender 0.127 seconds, as Honda Team Kunimitsu driver Jenson Button was the best of the SuperGT competitors in sixth.
Rain this morning had left the track in a wet state, with all drivers needing to run the wet-weather Hankook’s for their first runs.
Rast was the first to set a competitive time, however his 1 minute 52.016 second lap would not last for long as the drivers adjusted to the conditions and water was shifted from the track surface.
The best lap time was exchanged between seven drivers, with Audi Sport Team WRT’s Jonathon Aberdein holding the fastest time, a 1 minute 47.099 lap, before drivers headed to the pits for a fresh set of wet tyres.
With five minutes to go times continued to be better, R-Motorsports Daniel Juncadella was the first driver to break into the 1 minute 46’s, before BMW Team RMR’s Timo Glock snatched top spot with 1 minute 46.315 second lap.
Rast then broke into the 45’s, with a 1 minute 45.891 second lap, the 2019 DTM champion then improved to a 1 minute 45.552 second lap on his final tour of the Hockenheim circuit.
Wittmann improved but was unable to beat fellow two-time series champion, ending up 0.127 seconds slower.
Rast claimed his eighth pole of the year, joined by Wittmann on the front row.
Audi Sport Team Phoenix’s Mike Rockenfeller heads the second row, his fastest time of 1 minute 45.783 seconds was less than two tenths faster than Aberdein who starts fourth.
The second Team Phoenix driver Loïc Duval starts fifth after improving to a 1 minute 45.939 second lap with his penultimate attempt before beaching the car in the Sachskurve gravel.
2018 Super GT champion Jenson Button will start from sixth place, and best placed of the Japanese series’ competitors, with a time of 1 minute 46.206 seconds. The British driver was elevated after R-Motorsports’ Paul Di Resta had his lap time removed for ignoring the yellow flag brought out by a stranded Duval.
Glock will start the race race one from seventh, the BMW driver was lucky to escape slipping across the wet dragstrip surface that lines the final two corners.
Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline’s Robin Frijns was eighth fastest with a time of 1 minute 46.351 seconds, some 0.799 seconds off pole.
The BMW Team RBM drivers lock out the fifth row, with rookie Sheldon van der Linde’s time of 1 minute 46.383 seconds enough for ninth place, the South African was over two tenths faster than teammate Joel Eriksson in tenth.
After all four R-Motorsports Aston Martins had their final lap times removed for ignoring the yellow flag in the final moments of the session, Ferdinand von Habsburg ended up fastest of the quartet in 12th, some 1.2 seconds slower than Rast’s pole.
Button was able to lap the Hockenheim circuit much quicker than fellow SuperGT competitors Lexus Team Tom’s driver Ryō Hirakawa and Nissan Nismo’s Tsugio Matsuda who finished the session 20th and 21st respectively.
Race one gets underway at 13:35 CEST (12:35 BST).
