BMW Pirtek Racing’s Andrew Jordan believes “anything can happen” in the season finale of the 2019 British Touring Car Championship after a topsy-turvy qualifying session at Brands Hatch.
The 2013 champion had a strong Saturday but could not match team-mate Colin Turkington who stormed to pole position, and will line up third for race one despite an off at the high-speed Hawthorns Bend.
The incident meant Jordan lost his fastest lap time but still held efforts good enough to retain third on the grid for the opening encounter.
While Turkington extended his advantage by one point by virtue of pole position, Jordan out-qualified his nearest title rival Dan Cammish – who he currently sits just one point behind – by some nine positions.
Jordan believes the season showdown on the 2.4-mile Brands Hatch Grand Prix are often “strange” affairs due to weather and incidents, and feels “anything can happen” heading into the crucial three races.
“These championship finales are such strange weekends because anything can happen, and we saw it today with the weather and with some of the incidents on-track,” said Jordan.
“All that considered, third place is a very good place to be. Yes, it’s behind Colin [Turkington], which isn’t ideal, but I’m a fair bit ahead of the other title contenders, which is a big positive.”
Speaking of the incident, Jordan said placing a wheel “over the white line” on the entry to Hawthorns was his downfall, but feels he was “lucky” not to have a big accident.
It was hard to find a balance with the car today where I really felt I could be aggressive. I tried to push in qualifying, but a wheel over the white line and just lost the front end, but it wasn’t a big accident, which is lucky.
“I’m in the hunt tomorrow and I need to give it everything.”
The opening race of the day at Brands Hatch for the British Touring Car Championship is set to get underway at 11:35 BST.
