Power Maxed Racing’s Jason Plato set the benchmark pace in the opening British Touring Car Championship practice session at Silverstone.
The double champion was fastest for the majority of the 40-minute session, before again topping the timesheets within the final quarter.
He led title contender Dan Cammish in the Team Dynamics Honda Civic Type R, with a time of 57.731s around the 1.64-mile Silverstone National layout putting him just shy of half a tenth clear of Cammish.
An impressive performance from Ash Sutton put him third fastest, 0.119s off former team-mate Plato’s benchmark, despite the flat-out circuit not favouring his Subaru Levorg’s lack of straight line speed.
In fourth position was Cammish’s team-mate Matt Neal in the second of the FK8 Honda Civics, while Andrew Jordan led the BMW charge to complete the top five.
Team Toyota GB’s Tom Ingram placed sixth, three tenths off the pace, but still offering a good time despite a high-speed slide on the exit of Copse corner, getting a tank-slapper in his Corolla before gathering it up and continuing in the session.
Rob Collard was next in the second PMR Vauxhall Astra, while the in-form Adam Morgan ended the session eighth in his Ciceley Motorsport Mercedes A-Class.
Adrian Flux Subaru Racing’s Senna Proctor, who enjoyed his best weekend to date in the Subaru at Knockhill last time out, was ninth to place both BMR-run cars in the top ten.
Team BMW’s Tom Oliphant rounded out the top ten runners despite not setting a time until late in the session, while Jack Goff impressed in the Team HARD Volkswagen CC to go 11th, well within half a second of Plato’s pace-setting time.
Standings leader Colin Turkington was 12th, ahead of Stephen Jelley and Josh Cook, while Mike Bushell completed the top 15, continuing to stand in for Sam Tordoff for the remainder of the season after Tordoff’s family tragedy.
The next British Touring Car Championship practice session is set to get underway at 12:05 BST.
