Max Coates took a double victory in Donington Park’s Touring Car Trophy races at the weekend, although it was Lewis Kent and James Turkington who shared the top honours in the TCR UK class.
Coates claimed victory in race one after long-time leader and pole-sitter Lewis Kent ran out of fuel on the final lap, having led for the entire race. The Hyundai driver was, however, able to coast across the line to claim second overall, and win the TCR UK class.
Third went to Mark Wakefield, entered into the TCR UK class in a CUPRA, after a fast start saw him make two places, ahead of the best ex-BTCC car of Henry Neal in fourth in his Team Dynamics-run Honda Civic.
James Turkington brought his Ciceley Motorsport-run CUPRA home in fifth, having switched to a TCR-spec car for the first time, whilst series newcomer Nick Halstead was sixth in the Fox Motorsport Honda Civic.
Darelle Wilson had been running in third early in the race in his Vauxhall Astra, but he ran wide and dropped out of the leading group. Wilson was eventually classified in seventh, over half a minute from the lead, after also picking up a ten-second penalty for repeatedly exceeding track limits.
Alex Day failed to finish, after picking up broken suspension at the start. HMS Racing was able to get his ex-BTCC Audi repaired and he completed seven laps towards the end of the race.

The second race saw Kent seek to make amends for the team’s mistake in race one. Initially things looked promising, as the youngster leapt into the lead at the start. However, Kent hit a kerb at the chicane on lap five and broke something on his Hyundai, causing him to limp back to the pits and out of the race.
That left Coates leading once again, eventually claiming a second outright win in the TCT class ahead of Neal in second.
The TCR UK class honours went to the CUPRA of James Turkington, who emerged out of a close three-way battle between himself, Darelle Wilson and Mark Wakefield. Turkington made slight contact with Wilson on lap 12 to take fourth, before getting past Wakefield for third overall one lap later.
Wakefield was fourth in his CUPRA, just a second behind, with Wilson a further second adrift in fifth.
Halstead and Day completed the classified finishers.
The next TCR / TCR UK event is at Croft on 6 – 7 July.
