Santiago Urrutia quickest again in final practice at Hockenheim

Santiago Urrutia left it similarly late to complete a clean sweep in practice ahead of this weekends TCR Europe double header at Hockenheim.

A quickest time of 1:47.389 around the 2.8-mile Baden-Wurttemberg circuit with little over two and a half minutes remaining proved enough for the Uruguayan to edge out fellow Audi racer Gilles Magnus and the Hyundai of Josh Files.

Magnus led the session for the majority, setting an early benchmark of 1:48.157 on his second flying lap prior to the only red-flag stoppage of the session.

The cause of that was Victor Davidovski at Turn 10, front-right damage on the Honda Civic Type R FK8 the end result as it made its way back into pit lane.

Improvements from Aurelien Comte’s Peugeot 308 TCR and Maxime Potty’s Volkswagen Golf GTI gave them the briefest of stints at the top of the timesheets, before Magnus responded with a new benchmark.

That looked set to hold until the chequered flag, but for Urrutia to pip him to the post in the final few minutes.

He therefore ends the day with a one-hundred percent record in both free practice sessions in Germany.

Behind Magnus and Files came the latter’s compatriot Dan Lloyd on his debut weekend for Brutal Fish, whilst Potty and Comte were eventually fifth and sixth after some late shuffling of the order.

Stian Paulsen made strides forward in the CUPRA, seventh overall and cutting the relative deficit to the session pace-setter by 0.6 seconds.

Dusan Borkovic was eighth in the next of the Target Competition-run Hyundais, with Tom Coronel ninth in his best showing of the weekend so far for Boutsen Ginion Racing.

Joint championship leader Nelson Panciatici ended a fairly anonymous day tenth for Yvan Muller Racing, just ahead of ex-F1 racer Gianni Morbidelli’s VW.

Season-opener race winner Mat’o Homola was 12th, with Swedish siblings Andreas and Jessica Backman behind in 13th and 14th respectively.

Julien Briche – the other race winner from Budapest – rounds out the top 15.

The weekends action continues with qualifying, scheduled to get underway at 09:05 BST tomorrow.
