Esteban Guerrieri was delighted to score his third FIA World Touring Car Cup win of the year, ‘profiting from the opportunity to be on pole’ for the reverse grid race.
The Münnich Motorsport driver led the race from lights-to-flag to take the team’s fifth win of the season, and Guerrieri’s third, to extend his lead over team-mate Néstor Girolami in the standings.
The Argentine was adamant that it was not an easy win, as he never had a particularly big margin over the Volkswagen of Benjamin Leuchter in second.
“It was a tough one,” said Guerrieri. “I qualified in P10 this morning to get the pole, and it was just luck. My team-mate Néstor was P11.
“This is for the team; we have a great bunch of guys here. We made little improvements from yesterday and I’m really happy to score good points.
“I had a little problem with the rear on the last lap and I think Benjamin had a problem with his lights because he kept flashing them!”
Guerrieri was pleased to score yet more points to take his championship points tally to 153, a clear 20 ahead of Girolami.
“I knew I had to do a good start, which was 50 percent of the race done. But I had to really keep the focus in this race even though it looked easy from the outside, like I was controlling it.
“This track is always tricky, even more when you have a potential to be in the top ten but not a big margin.
“We suffered some degradation of the tyres and we had to be very precise and just keep my concentration there.
“It worked very well, and I am very happy. We profited from the opportunity to be on pole and it’s great to be here, to get some good points for the team.”
