PCR Sport’s Mikel Azcona described winning the TCR Europe title on home turf at Circuit de Catalunya as ‘the most exciting moment’ of his life.
Eighth in the finale proved enough for the CUPRA racer after chief title rival Jean-Karl Vernay could only manage seventh after a late pass and the other two contenders – Dusan Borkovic and Attila Tassi – collided at the chicane on the opening lap.
“Amazing, this is unbelievable,” Azcona described to TouringCars.net.
“This has been the most exciting moment of my life, to be European champion with these fantastic drivers, these brands and my family, this is amazing to win.”
Reflecting on the race as a whole, Azcona admitted it became a lot easier to relax after the first lap skirmish that wiped half of his opposition out of the running.
“I think the most difficult part was at the start of the first lap, because we have Tassi, Borkovic and Files battling together and we were just looking at the championship. But then after that, it was an easy and comfortable race.”
He wouldn’t be drawn on plans for 2019, insisting the short-term focus is on celebrating this success before the attention switches to next season.
“At the moment, we need to celebrate with my people, my brand Cupra and my family. Then we will see for next year.”
