Audi’s defending champion René Rast set the pace in second practice for the DTM at the Nürburgring, clocking two fast laps late in the session to go over two tenths faster than Mercedes’ Paul di Resta.
Under clear skies and on a dry track Rast clocked a time of 1 minute 22.086 seconds, some four seconds faster than in Friday’s wet first session, in the final two minutes of the session to put in the best lap.
Mercedes’ points leader Di Resta was second quickest, ahead of stable-mate Lucas Auer in third.
Jamie Green was fourth fastest in his Team Rosberg Audi, ahead of Spaniard Daniel Juncadella in fifth, with the Spaniard having been on top of the times with just three minutes left before four drivers went ahead of his time.
Mike Rockenfeller put his Team Phoenix Audi in sixth, ahead of Mercedes title contender Gary Paffett in seventh, the Brit improving his time late on in the session to go just over three tenths shy of the pace.
Two-time champion Marco Wittmann was the best of the BMW drivers in eighth, four tenths off the pace at a circuit where he has twice won before.
Audi’s most recent pole-sitter Loïc Duval and BMW’s Timo Glock completed the top ten, which was separated by just under half a second. The entire field was covered by just over a second, with BMW’s Joel Eriksson propping up the timesheets in 18th place.
Qualifying is scheduled to get underway at 10:15 BST (11:15 CEST) followed by race one at 12:30 BST (13:30 CEST).
