Team Honda ADAC Sachsen’s Dominik Fugel won his first race in ADAC TCR Germany since 2016 in the second race at the Nürburgring, which was stopped five minutes early due to a crash for David Davidovac.
Fugel jumped into the lead at the start from fourth on the grid, with reverse-grid pole-sitter Luke Wankmüller not getting a good start, along with fellow front row starter Benjamin Leuchter.
Leuchter kept Fugel honest in the early stages of the race, but the Max Kruse Racing driver made no real attempt to take the lead.
Saturday’s first race winner Mike Halder made the most progression and, having started in tenth, the Team Honda ADAC Sachsen driver was up to sixth by the end of the opening lap.
Halder fought with HP Racing’s Harald Proczyk and Wolf-Power Racing’s Oliver Holdener in the early stages, and on lap three, having both got past Holdener, Halder passed Proczyk for fourth.
Halder then picked off Wankmüller’s Opel, moving him into third, before closing the gap to the leading duo.
After 12 laps, however, Davidovac crashed his Opel at the exit of Turn 7 and the safety car was called upon to neutralise the race. With only five laps remaining though, the decision was taken to fly the red flags and declare a result.
That allowed Wankmüller to hold on to fourth and claim his best result of the season, ahead of team-mate Proczyk in fifth.
Hyundai Team Engstler’s Luca Engstler took sixth and gave the team’s new Hyundai i30 N TCR its best result to-date in TCR Germany, ahead of Prosport Performance’s Max Hesse in eighth.
Frenchman Theo Coicaud followed up his top ten in yesterday’s first race with eighth to ensure two Hyundais in the top ten, whilst Holdener and Michelle Halder completed the top ten, the latter having slipped back from sixth.
Erstwhile championship leader Niels Langeveld just missed out on the top ten, bringing his Racing One Audi home in 11th.
Another points finish means Austrian Proczyk moves the head of the drivers’ championship standings with 219 points, ahead of Langeveld in second on 209 and Engstler in third on 198.
The next TCR Germany event takes place at Zandvoort on the 17 – 19 August.
