PCR Sport’s Mikel Azcona was pleased with his progress throughout the weekend so far at Spa-Francorchamps, and was glad to extend his slim advantage in the TCR Europe standings.
Azcona came into the weekend tied on points with Target Competition’s Dušan Borković, but edged ahead before race one courtesy of two points for qualifying in third position.
In the race, finished ahead of rival Borković to extend his advantage to five points before tomorrow’s reverse-grid race.
“I’m really happy with the result because it’s my first time here in Spa in this difficult circuit,” Azcona told TouringCars.Net. “The pace so far during the weekend was fantastic from free practice one to race one I’ve improved a lot.
“Each session I was faster than the other sessions, so I’m really happy, and the team worked really hard to give me a good car. And the pace in the race was very good.”
Azcona’s focus is now the long-game for the championship, and he is hopeful he can secure another solid points haul in tomorrow’s race, which he will start from seventh position.
“The most important thing is to be regular and get points throughout the weekend, and to not get any zero scores. The championship is very long and you need to push and to think, and I’m first in the championship now so we need to maintain this.
“I will start P7 I think, today I did a good result, I have the points. I’m going to concentrate and not do any mistakes, to get some points but not put the car at risk.”
Race two of the TCR Europe weekend gets underway at 11:20 CEST (10:20 BST.)
