Audi’s René Rast again topped the times in second practice for the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, as times tumbled throughout the 40-minute session on a drying track.
Times were around 50 seconds slower than the dry laps which drivers were able to complete early on in first practice, as the session took place on a wet but drying track.
Boutsen Ginion Racing’s Tom Coronel was the first to put in an early fast lap, with the Dutchman putting in a time of 10 minutes 43.110 seconds early on in the damp conditions.
The top time then changed hands to Aurélien Comte, Norbert Michelisz, René Rast, Tom Coronel and Thed Björk, before ending up back with Rast in the closing minutes after his time of 10 minutes 19.761 seconds propelled the defending DTM champion to the top.
Rast was a mere 0.219 seconds faster than YMR’s Thed Björk around the 26 kilometre circuit, despite the Hyundai driver hauling 60 kg of compensation weight compared to most of his opposition carrying none on board.
Leopard Lukoil’s Jean-Karl Vernay enjoyed a strong session once again, the Frenchman putting his Audi in third fastest. His team-mate Gordon Shedden once again endured a torrid time, after the Scot struggled with damage on the left-rear corner of his Audi, possibly as a result of his first practice prang.
Norbert Michelisz was the leading BRC Racing Hyundai driver in fifth, ahead of the Peugeot of Mat’o Homola in sixth.
Sébastien Loeb Racing’s Rob Huff, who had been second in first practice, was seventh after a late time pushed him up the order.
Coronel failed to improve after his time that briefly put him top, ending up in eighth, 5.723 seconds off the pace.
Completing the top ten were the Audi of Frédéric Vervisch – the last driver within ten seconds of the pace – and the Alfa Romeo of Gianni Morbidelli.
Qualifying is scheduled to take place at 15:30 CEST (14:30 BST).
