Championship leader Tom Ingram feels he is a very strong position following a consistent showing in the opening British Touring Car Championship weekend at Brands Hatch, topped off with a victory in race three.
The 2017 Independents champion told TouringCars.Net he was very pleased with the first few rounds, and thoroughly enjoyed the final race of the day, in which he came through from 11th to win.
“It’s great to come away from it with a really good points haul,” said Ingram. “We’re right in the mix of the championship, with a really enjoyable race three which made it fantastic.”
The Speedworks Motorsport driver progressed from ninth to fourth in the opening race, but slipped back to 11th in a truly eventful second race.
“That was the aim coming into the weekend coming into the weekend is to stay out of trouble and just try to pick up some decent points,” explains Ingram.
“Race two was what it was, we had to do the same as what everybody else was doing. We had to take the wet tyres like.
“We couldn’t take a risk, it would have been stupid, we would have got fired off on the first lap – so it was just a case of copy everybody else and get to the end.”
Victory in the reverse grid race has given Ingram a three point lead over Jack Goff in the championship standings.
Ingram has consistently made strong starts to the season at Brands Hatch Indy – winning a race on the opening day of the championship for three consecutive years.
Moving forward, he hopes he can consolidate his lead and carry momentum forward to the next round at Donington Park.
“We know how to lead a championship now, we’ve done it so we’re in such a strong place now.
“The car feels amazing with carrying weight – feels better with carrying weight than it does not carrying weight – so that puts us in a really strong position going into Donington so I’m excited for it.”
