Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram said his Toyota Avensis was ‘incredible’ as he progressed from 14th to win race two of the British Touring Car Championship at Donington Park.
The 2017 Independents champion told TouringCars.Net he was surprised just how much pace he had in race two, in which he admitted he was aiming for a top twelve finish.
“We know the car is incredible on the standard tyre without weight,” said Ingram. “So we felt really confident that we had the pace on people. So as soon as the chances came, I had to take them.
“I wanted to stay inside the top twelve ideally to get myself the best opportunity for the reverse grid, and I think we ended up well inside the top twelve in that one!
“But I am well pleased with that, car was fantastic, team has done a great job, so it’s a happy Tingram!
Ingram believed he would make progress in the second race of the day, but was surprised how quickly he made up positions with relative ease.
“The car just felt fantastic, it was made my life very easy to pick people off here there and everywhere, the car was just on rails, it was so so good to drive.
“I say it was on rails, but four laps from the end I nearly threw it off – my head wasn’t there. I must have been thinking about what the dog was up to, or what I was having for dinner, and all of a sudden I was sideways! So I had to bring myself back in line for that.”
The championship leader headed into the weekend with maximum ballast onboard, and will carry the full 75 kilos into the reverse grid race.
“It’s going to make Thruxton a bit difficult with the weight, but let’s see what happens in the next race. We might come out not leading the championship yet, so lets wait and see what the next race brings and go from there.
“We’ll try and stay top ten if we can, and get some decent points, and see where it puts us.”
