Boutsen Ginion Racing’s Benajmin Lessennes has been handed a post-race 10-second penalty for contact with Münnich Motorsport’s James Thompson in the opening FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) race at the Hungaroring.
Thompson had been set to score two points until Lessennes hit his fellow Honda driver at Turn 1 on lap eight, dropping the Brit out of the points to 13th.
After the race the Belgian racer was penalised, giving the final points to Mehdi Bennani and demoting Lessennes to 14th.
“It’s unfortunate but I can’t control other people,” said Thompson to TouringCars.Net. “We could have ended up leading the second race in Marrakech, but we unfortunately got turned around and then squeezed.
“What can I do – it’s tight here and we do keep getting knocked off. Everybody keeps coming and apologising, and people keep getting penalties, but it is what it is.
“I don’t think we should have been as far back to start with. On our pace from the first two sessions we should have been in the top six, and we’ve lost pace all weekend, so we’re going to have a bit of a look at it.”
Elsewhere Comtoyou Racing’s Denis Dupont was also handed a 10-second penalty for track limit infringements, dropping the Belgian to 22nd position.
