BMW’s Marco Wittmann took his first DTM win of the season in race two at Zandvoort, finishing ahead of Audi’s Mike Rockenfeller and Loïc Duval to move up to second overall in the championship standings.
From second on the grid, Wittmann demonstrated his determinism early in the race to pass BMW colleague and pole-sitter Augusto Farfus on the opening lap.
The defending champion then pitted on lap 12 and headed the train of drivers who had completed their stops early on, as Audi’s Duval continued to lap at the head of the field, running the longest of any driver on his opening stint.
Fresher tyres allowed Wittmann, with Rockenfeller in pursuit, to catch the Frenchman at the head of the field, who duly did his bit to allow Rockenfeller to close up to the rear bumper of Wittmann.
When Duval pitted, the final ten minutes saw a close run to the chequered flag, but ultimately Rockenfeller couldn’t find a way past and Wittmann took his first win since the Nürburgring in September 2016.
Duval held on to third after his pit stop, having held enough of an advantage after his long first stint, taking his first DTM points and first podium at the same time.
Audi’s Mattias Ekström held on to take fourth, despite struggling for pace in the latter stages and reporting falling tyre pressures, to also move back into the lead of the championship which he had briefly lost on Saturday.
Fifth-placed Nico Müller acted as Ekström’s rear-guard in the final few laps, preventing Mercedes’ Gary Paffett from getting past and leaving the Brit to settle for sixth.
Maxime Martin – who had earlier stalled at the start of the race – took seventh, heading up a trio of BMW drivers that also included Timo Glock in eighth, despite starting from the back of the grid, and Farfus in ninth, who had lost out in the pit-stop phase of the race.
Tenth went to Audi’s Jamie Green, after BMW’s Bruno Spengler was given a ten-second post-race penalty for contact between the duo on the penultimate lap of the race.
Mercedes’ Maro Engel took 12th, but could have been higher had he not had a puncture whilst running in sixth, with the damage likely having come from contact with Audi’s René Rast who was on his out lap after his pit-stop.
The duo went side-by-side exiting Turn 3, and contact between the pair caused damage to the right-rear suspension of the erstwhile points leader, leading to Rast’s early retirement.
Another poor race for Mercedes also saw Lucas Auer, formerly the Stuttgart marque’s best-placed driver in the points, finish in 15th after lacking pace and then picking up a front-right puncture, whilst Paul di Resta retired in the pits with yet more technical issues after 12 laps.
UPDATE: Wittmann was subsequently excluded from the results for failing to have enough fuel in his car in post-race checks, handing the win to Rockenfeller.
