Audi’s Loïc Duval emerged as the fastest driver in Sunday morning’s final DTM practice at Zandvoort, ahead of BMW’s Augusto Farfus and Mercedes’ Maro Engel.
Duval was one of the early pace-setters in the half-hour session, initially with a time of 1 minute 28.924 seconds, before improving to a 1:28.857, which saw him hold the top spot for much of the first half of the session.
At the mid-point, fellow Audi racer Mattias Ekström took over at the top of the times with a lap of 1:28.835, before briefly Mercedes driver Lucas Auer (1:28.801) and then BMW’s Timo Glock took over in P1, the latter with a lap of 1:28.754.
With just minutes remaining in the session, Mike Rockenfeller put his Audi at the top of the times, before Farfus went quickest and finally Duval in the closing seconds of the session.
Engel was third, having improved his time at the very end of the session to be within two tenths of the pace, having been down in 17th just before the end. The DTM’s newest race winner was the only one of the Stuttgart manufacturer’s drivers to make it into the top ten.
Jamie Green headed a trio of Audi racers in fourth, ahead of Rockenfeller in fifth and Ekström in sixth, the duo having posted exactly the same lap time.
BMW drivers completed the top ten, with Maxime Martin ahead of Marco Wittmann, Timo Glock and Bruno Spengler.
Championship leader René Rast had a difficult session, ending up as the slowest driver and a not inconsiderable 1.966 seconds off the pace – the only driver to be over a second adrift.
Qualifying for race two takes place at 12:00 CEST (11:00 BST).
