Kantadhee Kusiri takes second Shanghai win to consolidate points lead

Liqui Moly Team Engstler’s Kantadhee Kusiri took victory in the second joint TCR Asia and TCR China race in Shanghai, with his second victory in a row moving the Thai racer into a clear championship lead.

Kusiri took a lights-to-flag victory to record his third win of the season, leading an Engstler Motorsport 1-2 as Diego Moran followed him across the line for his third consecutive second-place finish.

It wasn’t quite as plain sailing for the Ecuadorian Moran, however, as he dropped from second on the grid to fourth when the lights went out at the start. The Volkswagen driver immediately fought back though, and was back in second by Turn 6 having passed the TCR China drivers ahead of him.

TCR China competitor Alex Fung completed the podium in his Teamwork Motorsport Volkswagen, having battled hard for the position throughout the race with Andy Yan, Alex Hui and Filipe de Souza.

On lap seven things came to a premature end for Teamwork’s Filipe Clemente de Souza, who spun out all on his own at the final corner and into the barriers, having been battling for fourth place.

That enabled team-mate Alex Hui to claim the position, ahead of Yan in fifth.

Team Thailand’s Tin Sritrai finished in sixth overall, and third in TCR Asia, having made up most of his positions from tenth on the grid on the opening lap of the race, which he completed in sixth.

TCR China’s Wang Hao was seventh, ahead of erstwhile TCR Asia points leader Lai Wee Sing in eighth, who had a relatively quiet race to collect valuable points after his Saturday race retirement.

The results mean Kusiri moves into a ten-point lead in the drivers’ standings, ahead of Sritrai and Moran, who is a further one point adrift.

The TCR Asia series season finale takes place with the TCR International Series in Zhejiang, China in early October.
