Admist a dramatic stratline multi-car incident bringing out the red flag at the first start, Gianni Morbidelli claimed a clean sweep of victories for the second time in the TCR International Series, pipping DG Sport Compétition’s Mat’o Homola on the final lap with a classy overtake at Turn 11.
When the lights went out the first time, a multi-car pile-up saw the red flags immediately flown. The incident was caused when M1RA’s Roberto Colciago moved over on Leopard Racing’s Vernay, who was sandwiched against the Craft-Bamboo Racing car of James Nash.
The trio spun into each other, with Nash then spearing across the circuit and collecting WestCoast Racing’s Giacomo Altoè who in turn spun back into the middle of the circuit and took out the second Leopard car of Rob Huff, Stian Paulsen’s SEAT and Engstler Motorsport’s Luca Engstler.
Colciago’s spinning car was also collected hard by Craft-Bamboo Racing birthday boy Pepe Oriola, and the end result was that seven cars were out of the race and unable to take the restart.
When the race restarted it was Homola’s Opel which lead the way for much of the race, whilst behind him Vernay, Dan Lloyd and Morbidelli battled for the podium positions.
The real mover in the pack was race one winner Morbidelli, who pulled off a superb pass on Lloyd for third at Turn 12 before repeating the move on Vernay for second four laps later.
Morbidelli then tried to pass Homola for the lead on the penultimate lap but couldn’t make the move stick, before trying once again on the final lap and completing the pass into the final corner to make it two wins out of two for the Italian.
Homola would take his second podium this year, finishing fractionally behind the WestCoast Racing driver, with Jean-Karl Vernay retaking the lead from Attila Tassi by rounding out the podium.
Daniel Lloyd was battling with the Leopard Racing driver in the latter stages of the race, but would still take a signficant points haul in fourth place.
Stefani Comini completed the top five in his ComToYou Racing Audi RS3 LMS, with team mate Fédéric Vervisch finishing a further 11 seconds behind in sixth.
Icarus Motorsport’s Duncan Ende stayed out of trouble to secure his first points finish in seventh, with the American benefitting late in the race from drive-through penalties for Jens Reno Møller and Grégoire Demoustier for exceeding the track limits, together with a late-race retirement from Attila Tassi, who stopped with a puncture with three laps to go.
Møller was eighth after his penalty, ahead of GE-Force’s Davit Kajaia in ninth, who was two laps down after an earlier puncture, and Zengő Motorsport’s Ferenc Ficza.
Ferry Monster Autosport’s Danny Kroes had been running in the points, but the Dutchman fell off the circuit after eight laps and ended up in the tyres at the penultimate turn.
Leopard Racing’s Jaap van Lagen made the restart, but he retired after just one lap when he picked up a puncture whilst avoiding a spinning Tassi between Turns 7 and 8.
The result sees Vernay move back to the top of the championship standings on 153 points, ahead of Tassi on 151 and Colciago on 145, with the latter two M1RA drivers failing to score any points in Germany.
