BMW Team RBM’s Bruno Spengler was able to command the first race of the Norisring weekend, as the Canadian struck first at the start to move into the lead heading to turn one, leading right until the finish line over 60 laps later.
The 2012 champion, who not only took his 15th DTM career win, took the first win for BMW at the Nuremberg-based circuit since Great Britain’s Steve Soper back in 1992.
“I’m very, very happy after a great day for us and for the whole team through the whole race,” admitted Spengler at the post-race press conference, who said his start was the key to taking the win.
“It was a bit chaotic at the start, because it started to rain really late on the grid, like it always does here at Norisring. When it starts raining, it’s just on the grid, but it makes it exciting for everyone.”
He also credited the hard work of Bert Mampaey’s Mechelen-based outfit for helping to bring the M4 DTM back to a competitive level, after difficulties at the Hungaroring last time out.
“In the end, I could get away, and in the wet, the car was really good so I could push, brake late, so I had a great car. Later on when it was dry I was still really happy, so I have to thank the team for giving me the car today in both the wet and the dry. That’s not easy for a team to achieve, and even in qualifying, we were performing.
“It’s great to win here for the team, as well as for BMW to get a 1-2 here at the home race. Everyone at BMW has a reason to celebrate today after all the hard work they did.”
In terms of race victories around the 2.3-km track, Spengler’s win now puts him level with Audi Sport Team Rosberg’s Jamie Green with four a piece, with the 33-year-old last having won at Norisring back in 2011.
“For me, it’s been really special today taking my fourth win here, and Norisring is my favourite track. I really love the atmosphere here, and the fourth win here is pretty cool. And it’s also been very special for my race engineer – it’s his first year in the job and today was his first win.”
