Eurotech Racing have confirmed that Brett Smith, the son of injured regular racer Jeff Smith, will take over his father’s drive for the remainder of the current British Touring Car Championship season.
Jeff was one of three drivers injured in a huge shunt in qualifying for the last round at Croft, with the injuries he sustained ruling him out of racing for the rest of the year.
As a result, Eurotech have opted to put Brett into the second car alongside Jack Goff for the remainder of the campaign.
25-year-old Brett has spent the first part of 2017 racing in the MINI Challenge with the Eurotech team, his second season in the series, where is currently top of the standings after picking up three pole positions, five wins, ten podiums and six fastest laps.
His previous racing record saw him compete in the Renault Clio Cup, BARC Clio Cup and the Mazda MX5 Championship.
“I am naturally extremely disappointed for my season to be ended in this way,” said Team Principal Jeff. “Having assessed a number of driver options the team are in agreement that Brett gives us the best opportunity to provide a strong second half to the season.”
Brett will get his first chance to sample the Eurotech Honda Civic during next week’s Dunlop tyre test at Snetterton.
TouringCars.Net understands that Team Dynamics have accelerated the build of their spare Civic to supply to Eurotech, although it is unknown if the car will be completed in time for the Snetterton test.
