Following on from his main race win at the Nürburgring Nordschleife , Nicky Catsburg was delighted with the results in the Eifel region that have helped him to now take the lead in the 2017 WTCC drivers’ standings, ahead of Honda’s Tiago Monteiro and team mate Thed Björk.
The Dutchman, who now joins the ROWE Racing BMW customer racing team for the ADAC Zurich 24 Hours of Nürburgring, admitted that it was a great feeling to lead the main race from lights-to-flag.
“I saw a lot of fans and saw some Dutch flags and Norbi was struggling to keep up. It really was a great race for us,” he said, crediting the team for their efforts over the weekend.
“We really got the set-up right. After race one, we got a little try out and for race two, we got it really good, so super happy.”
Catsburg now leads Monteiro in the standings by just two points, whilst Björk is just a further six behind the Portuguese driver.
Upon being asked on whether he was worried about any possible issues like the tyre failures suffered by team mate Nestor Girolami and Monteiro, he had no reasons to be worried.
“I felt pretty confident. We took some measurements for race one, and in race one, we had no issues. Race two, we stayed conservative and still managed to pull a gap. Incredibly happy, and I think that with Tiago not scoring any points, it’s a good weekend for us.”
Along with Catsburg leading the driver title fight, Polestar Cyan Racing now moves to the next round at Portugal with an extended lead in the constructors’ standings on 404 points, 40 ahead of Honda.
Polestar’s Head of Motorsport Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin praised the hard work and time spent by the team at the track, stating it was a factor in the results secured by the Swedish outfit.
“We can’t be anything but very pleased with this weekend. We have put down a lot of hours on this circuit, both for our race and road cars.
“To be able to capitalise on that is nothing but amazing. Nicky, Thed, Néstor and everyone in the team have done a great job and we look forward to continue our fight for the World Title.”
