Colin Turkington takes BMW’s 100th win in the BTCC

Colin Turkington took BMW’s 100th victory in the British Touring Car Championship with a lights-to-flag win in race three at Thruxton, ahead of Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram and Eurotech Racing’s Jack Goff.

From the reverse-grid pole position, Turkington got off to the perfect start and controlled the race, with the Northern Irishman never being challenged for the victory, winning with a comfortable 2.5 second advantage.

Ingram took second, having worked his way past Goff for the runner-up position on lap nine. The move means that the Toyota driver has finished all bar one race so-far in 2017 inside the top ten, and he extends his lead to 17 points at the top of the drivers’ championship.

Goff held on to take his second podium finish in a row, ahead of the factory Honda of Gordon Shedden in fourth, who got past Handy Motorsport’s Rob Austin for the position on lap eight.

Austin took fifth, ahead of the only on-the-pace Subaru of Ash Sutton in sixth, with the BMR driver having got past BMW’s Rob Collard for the position with just three laps to go.

Collard was seventh, giving the BMW driver and race two winner important points to keep him fourth overall in the standings, ahead of Ciceley Motorsport duo Aiden Moffat and Adam Morgan.

Honda’s Matt Neal completed the top ten, with the three-time champion carving his way through the field from 29th on the grid to earn six crucial points in the championship battle.

Power Maxed Racing’s Tom Chilton had to settle for 11th after being passed by Neal on the final lap of the race, ahead of BTC Norlin Racing’s Dave Newsham and BMW Pirtek Racing’s Andrew Jordan.

Eurotech’s Jeff Smith had been running in tenth position, before the Honda driver suffered a high-speed spin on lap 11 in front of the pack. Remarkably all cars managed to avoid Smith, and he re-joined the race but could only finish in 27th place.

The poor run of form continued for Subaru, with the exception of Sutton, and Jason Plato, as the two-time champion struggled around at the back for most of the race, including a stop in the pits.

After his race two shunt, Motorbase Performance’s Martin Depper failed to start the race, along with the AmD Audi of Ant Whorton-Eales.

Whilst Daniel Lloyd’s participation had been in doubt after his huge race two accident, the Triple Eight engineers did manage to repair the MG, albeit not in time for the race start. Lloyd ventured out after lap one, completed a few laps, before contact was made with Motorbase’s Luke Davenport and both drivers were forced to retire with damage.
