Tiago Monteiro expects to see Honda’s hard work rewarded in 2017

Tiago Monteiro is confident that Honda’s hard work during the off-season will be ‘recognized and rewarded’ in 2017, as he targets victory in this weekend’s World Touring Car Championship races in Morocco.

Monteiro is looking to take advantage of the withdrawal of Honda’s main rivals Citroën ahead of the 2017 season, with the Portuguese racer now heading into the new season as one of the favourites for the title.

The 40-year-old took two victories in the 2016 season on his way to third overall in the drivers’ championship, and he wants to start 2017 with a win as well.

“No one can aspire to win a world title without victories,” said Monteiro. “So that will be our goal in Marrakech. We have worked hard in recent years, we have made progress and we have also experienced disappointments.

“Since the end of last season many things have progressed and I am convinced that 2017 will not only be a great year for me but also for Honda who will see all their hard work recognized and rewarded.”

Monteiro explained some of the improvements which have been made to the Civic for this season, with Honda having carried out extensive pre-season testing.

“We have a much more efficient aerodynamic package and a better engine this year and this will allow us to be more comfortable at each track of the championship.

“A year ago I said it was the biggest step forward in performance I’d witnessed in the WTCC. Twelve months on, we’ve made an even bigger progression.

“I also know that our opponents have not stood idly by in the last few months and we will have to face some tough competition at every race.

“Not only will I have to face my opponents, but I am sure my teammates will also be strong competition. But that’s what makes the FIA WTCC so appealing. The important thing is to feel confident and ready for this first fight.”
