Polestar Cyan Racing’s Thed Björk took victory in the main World Touring Car Championship race at Monza, with Honda’s Tiago Monteiro taking the chequered flag in second.
Björk initially got off to a poor start from pole position, allowing the Honda of Monteiro to get into the lead on the opening lap.
However, the Swede then powered past Monteiro for the lead on lap two on the approach to the Parabolica, giving the Volvo a lead he would not lose for the rest of the race.
Monteiro then had to defend hard from the Münnich Motorsport Citroën of Rob Huff for the remainder of the race, although the Portuguese held on to take his second podium finish of the day.
Huff took third, and as a result moves up to joint fifth in the championship standings, having also taken his second podium of the day.
Polestar Cyan Racing duo Nicky Catsburg and Néstor Girolami were fourth and fifth respectively, the latter having passed the Honda of Norbert Michelisz on the final lap of the race and secure the position by a mere 0.001 seconds at the finish line.
That left the sole remaining factory Honda of Michelisz to take sixth, after the Ryo Michigami’s engine issues continued and forced him to retire from the race.
Sébastien Loeb Racing’s Mehdi Bennani was seventh, collecting valuable independent points after his Opening Race retirement, ahead of Campos Racing’s Esteban Guerrieri in eighth.
RC Motorsport’s Yann Ehrlacher continued to impress with ninth, whilst John Filippi completed the top ten with his second points finish of the day.
Opening Race winner Tom Chilton went from high to low after retiring from the race on lap five, the Brit reporting to have lost all drive on his Citroën. As his car was stopped on track at the Variante Ascari, the safety car had to be deployed for one lap to recover the vehicle.
Zengő Motorsport’s Dániel Nagy also retired from the race around the same time, his Honda coming to a standstill on the exit of the same corner, although the Civic was able to be recovered under yellow flag conditions.
The result means that Monteiro continues to lead the drivers’ championship standings with 85 points ahead of second-placed Björk, 13 points adrift.
