Polestar Cyan Racing have added Néstor Girolami and Nicky Catsburg to it’s driver line-up for the 2017 World Touring Car Championship, with the duo joining established driver Thed Björk in the team.
The Swedish outfit had already planned an expansion to three cars for 2017, as part of its plans to win the WTCC titles outright.
Argentine racer Girolami had been odds-on to secure one of the seats, after the former STC 2000 driver took part in last year’s Race of Japan for the team, scoring a best result of fifth.
“I am extremely grateful to get this opportunity together with Polestar Cyan Racing,” said Girolamo. “My first race with them last year was really promising and I felt right at home with the team.
“I hope to, together with everyone in the team, Thed and Nicky take the next step forward in the result lists this year.”
Catsburg had also been linked to the team after he was left without a drive following LADA’s surprise withdrawal at the end of 2016. The Dutchman was a race winner in 2016.
“I followed Polestar Cyan Racing’s progress closely from a competing team in 2016 and I am very glad to join them now,” said Catsburg.
“Their results from last year were impressive and I hope that I, together with Thed and Néstor, can put on a strong performance in order to deliver on our tough goals for the 2017 season.”
Polestar Head of Motorsport Alexander Murdzevski-Schedvin was unequivocal about his target’s for the coming season.
“We have full confidence in the preparations and abilities of the Polestar Cyan Racing team and the driver line-up with Thed, Néstor and Nicky,” said Murdzevski-Schedvin. “However, we are by no means expecting an easy time to reach our goal as it has been brought forward one year and the opposition is as tough as ever.
“But there should be no doubt about that we have the World Title as our ultimate goal this year.”
