The forthcoming TCR Europe Trophy will have a revised format for 2017, going away from the inaugural points-based scheme, based over seven races during the 2016 season.
It saw Belgium’s Pierre-Yves Corthals take top honours in his DG Sport Compétition Opel Astra, 14 points ahead of team mate Frédéric Caprasse.
The event will now take place as a one-off affair, with Adria International Raceway being the backdrop over a single weekend, between the 28th and 29th of October.
Drivers will be eligible to qualify for the event at Adria through either taking part in a full season of racing in one of the European-based championships, or have raced in all of the TCR International Series European rounds in 2017.
The format has yet to be officially finalised, but depending on the amount of entries, it could see a departure from the standard race weekend formats that are employed by the respective championships. This also may see an introduction of Qualifying races, as well as a longer Final race at the end of the weekend.
“This will be one of the most important events we have ever had. We have followed with interest the successful growth of TCR and we are very proud and excited by the idea of hosting the European final,” said Mario Altoé, Director of the Adria International Raceway, which has hosted the likes of the DTM and the TCR Italy Series in recent times.
“We have proved in the past that our racetrack suits Touring Car competition and we will do our very best to create a unique event that will attract a large number of fans.”
“I can’t wait to see all the best drivers from the different TCR series in Europe facing each other in the Trophy Europe final,” stated TCR promoter Marcello Lotti, who echoed the sentiments of Altoé.
“The event in Adria will be the perfect advertisement for the ever-growing TCR brotherhood among the different series.”
