The World Touring Car Championship round in Thailand has been officially removed from the 2016 calendar due to ‘unresolved issues’ between promoter Eurosport Events and the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand.
The event had been in doubt for several months due to an agreement not being formally signed between the two parties. Originally scheduled to take place on 4 – 6 November, it means that there is now a two-month gap in the WTCC calendar.
The cancellation was widely known amongst those in the WTCC, and all that was left was for formal ratification at the meeting of the FIA World Motorsport Sport Council in Paris.
It means that the 2016 season will be reduced to 11 events and 22 races for the first time since the 2010 season, with the next meeting scheduled to take place in Qatar on the 24 and 25 November.
The season finale will once again take place under floodlights at the Losail International Circuit, with the event set to mark the retirement of WTCC legend Yvan Muller.
