Fredrik Ekblom will return to the driving seat for Polestar Cyan Racing in this weekend’s Chinese round of the World Touring Car Championship in Shanghai after three events away from the championship.
Ekblom, who contested the first 12 races for the Swedish team, stood aside from regular racing duties in the Volvo S60 in the races in Portugal, Argentina and Japan respectively.
In Portugal and Argentina, Ekblom was replaced by fellow development driver Robert Dahlgren, whilst in Japan the seat was taken by Argentine racer Néstor Girolami.
Ekblom will re-join Thed Björk in the team, who is the only driver to have contested every race with Cyan Racing in 2016.
“I am delighted to be back racing again,” said Ekblom. “I am really keen to utilise the impressive progress made by the team in the past races.
“I am very much ready for this challenge in Shanghai, especially as the team and Thed have raced here before in the WTCC.”
Polestar’s Head of Motorsport, Alexander Murdzevski-Schedvin, believes that rotating drivers once again is the right decision, as the marque prepares to expand and step up a gear for 2017.
“Fredrik’s extensive experience is vital to the progress of our programme, both in terms of testing and racing,” he said.
“It is also vital for us to be able to continue to run different drivers in preparation for next season when our goal is to fight for victories, compared to this year that is only about gathering data.”
