Rob Huff scored as brace of podium finishes in the World Touring Car Championship races in Argentina at the weekend, with the results lifting him to fourth overall in the drivers’ championship standings.
Having just missed out on getting through to Q3 on Saturday, Huff was able to make progress in both of Sunday’s races from fifth and sixth on the grid respectively.
In the Opening Race Huff found himself battling for a podium position by the end of the opening lap, having got past team-mate Tiago Monteiro at the start. The Brit then moved up to second on lap seven when he got past the Chevrolet of pole-sitter John Filippi.
The Main Race was more about luck for the Brit, who benefitted when Honda team-mate Norbert Michelisz went off the road along with Citroën’s Yvan Muller ahead of him.
That left Huff running in third and able to collect a second podium of the day, making him the only driver to stand on the podium twice at the weekend.
“It’s been a brilliant weekend for me, especially after qualifying P6, which is probably the worst place to start in the top 10 because you’re far from a podium in both races,” said Huff. “But I made a strong start to the Opening Race, took advantage when Tiago ran wide on the first lap and hunted down P2.
“In the Main Race, I was in the VIP seats to see the lead battle ahead. I just saw two cars making contact and Norbi going off the circuit, so suddenly I was third and was able to finish there to take my first double-podium with Honda.
“With the aerodynamics we have now we see the gaps opening up, especially through Turn 11.
“But for myself to get the championship back on track for the team means it was a really good weekend. I’m now up to P4 in the championship and it feels great to get things back on track like this.”
