Motorbase’s Mat Jackson became the second driver to take three wins in this year’s British Touring Car Championship campaign, amidst a dramatic shortened race as a result of a multi-car accident bringing out the red flag out on the very first lap.
Jackson had an electric getaway at the second start for the race, overtaking the race one winner, Subaru BMR’s Colin Turkington, on the inside at Hamilton, before remaining relatively unchallenged until crossing the finish line.
Turkington would finish 1.190 seconds behind the Ford driver, as Halfords Yuasa Racing’s Matt Neal was able to fend off a charging Rob Collard for the final podium spot of the race.
The Team JCT600 with GardX driver took a well-earned fourth place, having started 16th, breaking Turkington’s lap record from 2015 by 0.559 seconds in the process, posting a 1:56.362 during a spirited charge through the depleted field.
Jackson made headway in the first restart, having flown away from third on the grid to get past Turkington for the lead into Hamilton, before AmDTuning.com’s Ollie Jackson and Goodstone Motorsport’s Dan Welch came together coming out of Williams.
The pair spun out into the barrier on the right-hand side of the Bentley Straight, as both Power Maxed Racing’s Hunter Abbott and MG RCIB Insurance Racing’s Ashley Sutton were unable to avoid the resulting carnage.
All four drivers instantly retired from the race, along with Dextra Racing’s Alex Martin, who was hit from behind by Mark Howard in his VW, breaking the rear suspension of his Ford Focus.
Árón Smith also collected Kelvin Fletcher on the opening lap, hitting the side of the latter’s Chevrolet Cruze, damaging the front of his VW CC and forcing quick repairs that saw him return to the race several laps down.
Adam Morgan completed the top five, having been fighting hard with Gordon Shedden in the early stages, with the WIX Racing driver pushing the defending champion into a slide twice on the same lap, which saw the Scot finish in 10th place at the chequered flag.
Jason Plato was the next best-placed of the Team BMR drivers in sixth place, 0.432 seconds ahead of Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram.
Sam Tordoff retains his championship lead ahead of Matt Neal by taking eighth, and will line up on reverse grid pole position for the final race of the day, with Ingram alongside him on the front row.
Handy Motorsport’s Rob Austin would take another top ten finish, taking ninth in his Toyota Avensis, ahead of Shedden, with Laser Tools Racing’s Aiden Moffat being just 1.249 seconds outside the top ten in his Mercedes A-Class.
Other retirees included Team IHG Rewards Club’s Jack Goff, whose BMW 125i M Sport came to a halt on the second green formation lap and BMR’s James Cole, who suffered a propshaft failure just before Coram on the first start.
Eurotech Racing’s Martin Depper hit the barriers on lap six, with Team HARD’s Michael Caine retiring with just two laps remaining.
