Power Maxed Racing have today announced that current Volkswagen Cup standings leader Bobby Thompson is to be given a chance to shine behind the wheel of the Chevrolet Cruze in the second day of the official Dunlop tyre test at Snetterton tomorrow.
The move comes as PMR seeks to move it’s driver development programme to the next level, with programmes currently active in the Ginetta GT5 Challenge, British Rallycross Fiesta Championship and the VW Cup in addition to it’s two-car BTCC outfit. The team are also understood to be sourcing two Renault Clio Cup entries for 2017 as this scheme is set to expand.
The test itself allows teams to clock valuable mileage around the 2.99 mile Norfolk venue ahead of next months triple header of races, whilst it also allows Dunlop to extensively test their tyre compounds for next season on a range of NGTC models with varying weights, fuel loads, control components and chassis.
For Thompson, the opportunity to test for an established team in the UK’s premier tin-top series is the realization of a long-term ambition, and he is hopeful he can repay PMR for their support thus far in his career.
“It’s a dream come true to be able to test a BTCC car.” he commented.
“I have always loved the championship and can’t wait to see how I stack up. This year has shown me that Power Maxed Racing build an excellent car, and I want to repay the faith and support they have given me in my career so far.”
He was given a glowing review by the team’s principal, Adam Weaver, who is hopeful that Thompson can showcase his talent and secure a move onto the high-profile TOCA package of championships for next season.
“Bobby has shone this year for us in the VW Cup, and I believe in rewarding his hard work and talent with the chance to test a BTCC car. Bobby’s attitude, skill and personality are exactly what we are looking for in a driver, and we believe he will go a long way.” said Weaver.
“We are committed to our younger drivers and are delighted to be helping Bobby move forward in his career. We are confident that Bobby can make the move next year onto the prestige of the TOCA package.”
It is as yet unknown which of the team’s current drivers, Hunter Abbott and Kelvin Fletcher, will be stepping aside to allow Thompson time behind the wheel.
