Team RMG had two big reasons to celebrate at the second round of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, thanks to 2014 champion Marco Wittmann and Timo Glock taking victory in both races at the Red Bull Ring.
After what was a spellbinding 2014 season for the Niederzissen-based outfit, the new format for 2015 saw Stefan Reinhold’s outfit only secure two race wins, with Wittmann winning in Zandvoort and Maxime Martin at the Nurburgring.
With four races completed, Team RMG heads to the Lausitzring next week leading the team standings on 72 points, just one ahead of Bert Mampaey’s Team RBM.
“We haven’t ever had a weekend like this. I am just so happy. We worked hard with both drivers over the winter, and now all of this work is paying off,” explained Reinhold, who felt that the results the team had were “a dream.”
“I can only say a massive thanks to both of them. Marco’s win on Saturday was incredible, and I am really happy to have won a race with Timo [Glock] now.”
Glock, who took his third DTM career win on the Sunday, explained the race he won “couldn’t have gone any better.”
“I was able to pull away on the initial laps and then assert my lead after that. After the minor error in qualifying and the misfortune in Hockenheim, this was very satisfying, and BMW Team RMG had a perfect weekend with the wins for Marco and me.
“This makes me really happy. In general, it was a magnificent weekend for BMW.”
In both races, BMW Motorsport were able to keep ahead of both Audi and Mercedes in the constructors’ standings, with the latter not scoring a single point in either race, in what was a difficult weekend.
Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt praised the efforts of the entire team, as both races saw six M4 DTMs in the top ten, with Audi 95 points behind the Munich manufacturer.
“We had just the right strategy against the strong competition from Audi. It proved to be a very good decision to bring Timo in for an early pit stop. Mattias Ekström came on very strong again, but in the end it was enough.
“It was a perfect weekend for BMW Team RMG, getting the wins in both races. My congratulations on this outstanding achievement. And well done to all the other BMW drivers who finished in the points. As is so often the case, it was worth coming to Spielberg.”
