Mat Jackson claimed the final race of the day as the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship concluded it’s annual visit to Thruxton in front of a capacity crowd in the late afternoon sunshine.
Jackson, who also claimed victory in the first race at Donington Park, fended off Matt Neal by a mere 0.256 seconds at the chequered flag. It was a stroke of fortune that saw Neal rise through the ranks of the field, as team-mate Shedden was half-spun by Rob Collard, which enabled the three-time champion to take full advantage.
Adam Morgan completed a hat-trick of podium finishes in the WIX Racing Mercedes A-Class, edging out the MG duo of Josh Cook and Ashley Sutton, who recovered after issues apiece in the first race ruined their prospects for the weekend.
Collard came next ahead of Rob Austin, who posted his best result of the season to date for Handy Motorsport, with the top ten being rounded out by Sam Tordoff, Eurotech’s new addition Daniel Lloyd and the increasingly impressive Michael Epps in the Team.HARD Toyota Avensis.
The bad fortune continued for Shedden, who clashed with Jack Goff heading into the final chicane whilst disputing position. The IHG-backed BMW seemed to twitch off line under braking, tagging the rear of the striking black and orange Halfords Honda, sending them both off in front of the BARC grandstand. Though Shedden attempted to restart and spun once again on the inside of Allards, Goff elected to remain on the grass and both men’s afternoons ended in retirement.
There was also poor luck for Daniel Welch who, after starting on pole position, initially lost the lead to Jackson and then suffered a puncture at half-distance, likely as a result of his valiant defence against faster machinery behind.
Ashley Sutton’s fifth place handed him the Jack Sears Trophy once more, whilst Rob Collard retained his advantage at the top of the standings.
The BTCC circus now heads to Oulton Park on the 4th-5th June, where Silverline Subaru BMR Racing are tipped to find a new level of form, and the rest of the back will look to take the fight to the BMW currently atop the most competitive tree in British motorsport.
