Jack Goff is targeting a first British Touring Car Championship podium finish at Donington Park when the championship heads to the East Midlands venue for the second meeting of the season this weekend [16th-17th April].
Goff, who has tasted previous success at the circuit both on his car racing debut in 2009 and his Clio Cup championship-winning campaign in 2012, has yet to score a top three finish in the UK’s most popular tin top series around the 1.9 mile National layout, and in his potent new weapon, the BMW 125i M-Sport, he now arguably has his best chance yet after three consecutive seasons in the series.
Goff endured a mixed opening weekend to the season at Brands Hatch a fortnight ago [2nd-3rd April], with the Team IHG Rewards Club driver securing his first podium for West Surrey Racing, dovetailed with two earlier finishes of 10th and 7th respectively that left him in sixth overall, 12 points adrift of standings leader Matt Neal heading into the weekend.
“Brands Hatch provided us with some great highs in terms of the podium and the fastest lap of anybody on race day,” commented the one-time race winner.
“There was also a feeling that we could have done even better if I hadn’t made the move in Race One and lost a few spots, or if it hadn’t rained in qualifying and compromised our strategy.
“What was important was that the race pace was definitely there, and there’s no reason why we can’t show similar speed this weekend. Donington is a special track for me as it’s where I won on my car racing debut in 2009, and I also won there during my championship-winning campaign in the Clio Cup.
“I’ve never been on the podium there in the BTCC, but that’s certainly the aim this time, as well as bagging some good championship points.”
