China Touring Car Championship (CTCC) front-runner Sunny Wong will join WestCoast Racing for the TCR International Series season finale in Macau, racing a fourth Honda Civic TCR for the team.
Sunny Wong Yat Shing had already been revealed as a runner for the Swedish team on the entry list for the Guia touring car race, as reported by TouringCars.Net in October.
Wong will line up alongside WestCoast regulars Gianni Morbidelli and Kevin Gleason, and series rookie and former World Touring Car Champion Rob Huff.
The Hong Kong racer is a leading contender in the CTCC, where he has been victorious at the wheel of Teamworks Motorsport’s Citroën C-Elysée during 2015.
“I am very excited about racing the WestCoast Racing Honda Civic TCR in the Suncity Group 62nd Macau Grand Prix,” said Wong. “Although I don’t have experience with this particular car, I think I can adapt to it quickly on the Guia circuit, because our current CTCC car is actually more powerful and more difficult to handle.
“The team’s driver line-up is also very strong. I don’t expect to be able to match Kevin, Gianni and Rob for pace, but I will certainly try my very best to learn from the big boys and support them throughout the event.
“I had conversations with Rob earlier this year. He is very kind and agreed to teach me some of his Macau tricks, so I guess I already have a head start!
“WestCoast Racing is also a very strong team, as we can see from the results it has achieved in its first year of international competition in TCR, so this will surely be a special experience for me. I will enjoy learning and racing with this world-class race team and teammates and competitors.”
Team Manager James Nixon welcomed Wong to the team’s ‘formidable’ driver line-up, which has expanded to four drivers for the first time this season.
“Everybody at WestCoast Racing is thrilled to welcome Sunny Wong to the team for the season finale in Macau,” said Nixon. “It’s going to be incredible to conclude what has been a spectacular season on the Guia circuit and the excitement and intensity will be higher than ever as the title fight goes down to the wire.
“We have a formidable driver line-up and we’ll give our all to finish the year with a flourish. Sunny will be a great addition and he could play a critical role in deciding the outcome of the races and the championship, hopefully by taking points from our rivals!”
