The final qualifying session of the 2015 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) season saw ART Grand Prix’s Gary Paffett take the last pole position of the year around the Hockenheimring with a last-gasp attempt.
The Mercedes driver became the 15th pole sitter this season, posting the fastest time of a 1:32.645 around the 4.574-km track, which was still partially damp after overnight rain.
Paffett also took his first pole position since the 2012 season, where he eventually lost out in the drivers’ title fight to Bruno Spengler.
Rounding out the top three were Audi’s Jamie Green, who made it a British front row, and Mattias Ekström, with the top three being split by 0.084 seconds.
Miguel Molina showed great pace on a single flying lap, as the Spaniard was in contention for his sixth DTM career pole, but had to settle for fourth.
With the fight for the manufacturer’s crown still undecided, BMW’s fastest was Team RMG’s Maxime Martin, who was fifth, along with Team RBM’s Augusto Farfus, who will start from tenth.
Audi Sport’s full-on assault towards a successive manufacturers’ title was paving dividends, as six RS5 DTMs ended up in the top ten.
Adrian Tambay, Nico Müller and race one winner Timo Scheider will line up sixth, seventh and eighth, with Maximilian Götz being the other Mercedes driver to get into the top ten, posting the ninth fastest time.
BMW Motorsport’s run in qualifying was not that easy, as Tom Blomqvist was the next best driver after Farfus in 12th.
Bruno Spengler, 2014 champion Marco Wittmann, António Félix da Costa, Timo Glock and Martin Tomczyk ended up in the lower half of the grid, placing 15th, 16th, 19th, 21st and 23rd respectively.
Edoardo Mortara and Mike Rockenfeller were the only two Audis to not make into the top ten, as the pair will start from 13th and 14th.
Newly crowned champion Pascal Wehrlein starts from 17th in the final race of the year, ahead of Daniel Juncadella, who was in the top part of the timesheet early on.
Robert Wickens and Lucas Auer start 20th and 22nd, as the Austrian had an early off-track excursion at the Parabolika. Christian Vietoris will start from the back of the grid in last place.
The 2015 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season reaches its eventual conclusion, as the final race of the season starts at 1515 CEST (1415 BST), and lasts for 60 minutes plus 1 lap, with a mandatory pit stop.
